"Evil
Algae" Hunt
"Caulerpa
taxifolia Awareness Day"
Project Pacific honored by City of San Diego!
On March 3, 2001 the City of San Diego presented Project Pacific
with a Resolution declaring March 10, 2001 "Caulerpa taxifolia Awareness
Day" in San Diego. Councilmember Scott Peters introduced the resolution,
who will soon be calling for a City Ordinance banning the sale of Caulerpa
taxifolia within City limits. The resolution honors Project Pacific's efforts
toward public awareness about the so-called "evil algae".
On Saturday, March
10, 2001 Project Pacific held the "Evil Algae" Hunt south of
Hospital Point in La Jolla along Coast Blvd. Marine biologists led participants through
the tidepools and taught about the animals and plants that are potentially threatened by
this aquarium plant that has devastated large parts of the Mediterranean and was recently
found in Carlsbad. Biologists not only educated participants about the threat of the
"evil algae", but discussed the general problem of invasive species and the
destructive results when they are introduced to a non-native area.

Although
not considered a "high-risk" area where we might find the "evil
algae", we are pleased to declare that area of La Jolla "Caulerpa
taxifolia-free".

About 200 people
attended the event, including elementary students, high school students, college students,
teachers, professors, biologists, botanists, among others. Also present were
representatives from Councilmember Scott Peters' office, San Diego Lifeguards,
San Diego Council of Divers, Merkel & Associates, San Diego Regional Water Quality
Control Board, Marine Technology Society, and Aquatic Adventures Science Education
Foundation. Articles on Project Pacific and the "Evil Algae" Hunt appeared
on the front page of several local newspapers, and two news channels covered the event as
well.
